EPS (Encapsulated PostScript) is a vector image and is resolution independent, e.g. it's always shown in the best possible resolution, if used in e.g. Adobe Illustrator. You will be able to open a *.eps in Adobe Photoshop, but please note it will be converted to a bitmap. A Vector is not a bitmap image but a calculation of points.
Both the above images are magnified 6400% and the left is the Vector image and the Right is the bitmap (saved at 1200 dpi).
As you can see in the images above, the vector image looks better than the bitmap. So if possible it's always a better alternative to use the vector image. If the software you use doesn't support Encapsulated PostScript (*.eps) then you will also be able to use the Enhanced MetaFiles (*.emf), it's also a vector image. It doesn't mean that you should not use a bitmap as the above bitmap would look as good as the vector image at 100% magnification, printed at 1200 dpi. But if you need to resize the vector image you would not lose any quality. I do not recommend that you stretch the bitmap image.
EPS Settings alternative
When none of the EPS Settings have been selected (checked) the *.eps will be saved using RGB colors.
Above barcode have been saved using RGB colors. As shown in Adobe Illustrator.
Save *.eps in the the CMYK format.
In EPS Settings the Save *.eps in the CMYK format have been selected (checked)
When Save *.eps in the CMYK format have been selected (checked) the barcode image will be saved using CMYK colors.
The barcode above have been saved using CMYK colors. As shown in Adobe Illustrator.
Transparent Background CMYK.
Both Transparent Background CMYK and Save *.eps in the CMYK format have been selected (checked)
You will be able to save the barcode vector image with a transparent background, as the transparent background uses the CMYK colors, you will need to check the Save *.eps in the CMYK format or the backgound will not be transparent.
