The JAN-8 is used in retail in Japan. Please note that the most common barcode in North America is the UPC-A. The JAN-8 has one Checksum (Check Digit), it's the 8th digit and it's added automatically. JAN-8 starts with 45 or 49.
JAN-8 also supports the Light Margin Indicator, it's the > at the end of the barcode.
GS1 Recommended size
For the JAN-8 you can use one of the pre-defined sizes 80% to 200%.
For the Retail barcodes, you will be able to set the width and height from 80% to 200%, e.g. from X-dim from 0.264 mm (0.0104 In.), and 200% is 0.66 mm (0.0259 In.) and height of the bar, from 14.58 mm (0.574 In) to 36.46mm (1.435 In)
